The history of Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati moves through distinct stages: a 2004 foundation stone, construction from 2006, domestic match use from 2012, the first Ranji Trophy fixture in 2013, formal inauguration and international debut in 2017, then ODI and Test milestones.
Barsapara Cricket Stadium Guwahati history is not one opening date. The Assam Cricket Association Stadium was planned and built in phases, staged domestic cricket before its formal opening, and later became the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Cricket Stadium named in the state’s official venue listing.
Then Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi laid the foundation stone in June 2004 after the state government allotted 59 bighas to the Assam Cricket Association. Construction began in 2006, starting the long transition from project site to modern stadium.
Assam and Odisha played an East Zone Senior Women’s Inter-state one-day championship match, reported as the first match at the new ground. Cricinfo’s current venue profile also lists 2012 as the stadium’s establishment year.
The first first-class game ended in a draw: Assam made 323 and 217/9, while Kerala scored 362. Sanju Samson’s 211 was the defining innings. The match established Barsapara as a regular home for Assam’s domestic cricket.
The Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal, formally inaugurated the venue before its first international, a T20I between India and Australia. Australia won by eight wickets after bowling India out for 118 and reaching 122/2. The state portal describes Barsapara as India’s 49th international cricket venue.
The first ODI arrived on 21 October 2018. India chased West Indies’ 322/8 with 326/2, led by Virat Kohli’s 140 and Rohit Sharma’s unbeaten 152. On 22–26 November 2025, the ground hosted its first Test, with South Africa defeating India by 408 runs.
The stadium is at Barsapara, Guwahati, Assam 781018. It is owned by the Assam Cricket Association and is widely known as Barsapara Cricket Stadium, ACA Stadium and Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Cricket Stadium.
