Why Old Motera Stadium Was Reconstructed
Instead of reconstructing only parts of the old Motera Stadium, the venue was rebuilt from scratch as a world-class facility. The redevelopment created a much larger modern cricket ground with expanded spectator and team facilities.
Birth of New Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium Ahmedabad
The rebuilt stadium officially opened in February 2021 and was renamed Narendra Modi Stadium. Its first international match at the new venue was played on 24 February 2021, when India defeated England by 10 wickets.
A Major ICC Cricket World Cup Venue
The stadium became one of the major venues for the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, hosting several important matches, including the final.
A Curious Chapter in Narendra Modi Stadium History
Once considered a lucky charm, the stadium earned an unfortunate reputation when India were defeated by Australia in the 2023 World Cup final after a winning streak of 10 matches. Some fans labelled it the “Ahmedabad curse.”
