The Early Years — Eden Garden Cricket Ground

Cricket fever had already entered Kolkata in the 18th century. British soldiers and officers reportedly played on the open ground of the Maidan, laying the foundation for the Indian cricketing future. The Calcutta Cricket Club did not have a permanent ground; but by 1864 the Calcutta Cricket Club received permission to move to/use the eastern side of Eden Gardens and to build a permanent pavilion.

Eden Gardens Calcutta Cricket Stadium Enters Test Cricket

Long before the partition of India, Eden Gardens Cricket Ground became a venue for international cricket. In 1934, a historic match was played against England and it was a draw. The year became a part of a major transformation in the identity of Eden Gardens.

Why was old Eden Gardens Cricket Stadium reconstructed

The old Eden Gardens Cricket Ground of India survived for a century and then it was demolished and built from scratch. The transformation was more than mere ordinary; now the stadium could handle enormous crowds, and provide state-of-the-art facilities and infrastructure to players and spectators alike.

The Birth of the New Eden Gardens

1987 was a transformative year as Eden Gardens hosted the historic World Cup between Australia and England. The lift was installed, facilities were upgraded to make it one of the biggest global cricket stadiums of India.

A New Chapter in Cricket Ground’s History

On 18th February 1987, Eden Garden Cricket Ground of India hosted a one day international against Pakistan. This year marked the transition of Indian cricket history, when Eden Garden adapted to various cricket formats. The second major transformation took place in 2011 when Eden Garden adapted to the T20 Format.
